to start with there were a variation in the species they had different sized beaks. then the finches with the bigger beaks could fit more berry's in their mouth whereas the finches with the smaller beaks couldn't so they died out from starvation. The finches with the bigger beaks survived and bred successfully passing their genes onto their offspring.
