The need would then arise to be able to see said things in finer detail and on a smaller scale, which led to the invention of more technologically advanced microscopes.

The light microscope, or optical microscope as it is commonly referred to, was the earliest is the three microscopes mentioned to be invented. This scope used an array of lenses to bend the light reflecting from the sample being viewed and thus crafting a magnifying effect. This scope is similar to the others in that it allows you to see things on a much smaller scale but differs in the way in which it magnifies the sample.

The transmission electron microscope is a much more modern version of the light scope. This microscope can be compared to the others in that it magnifies the samples being viewed and requires the presence of light to function. However, this microscope has the capability of magnifying samples up to 2 million times. A number much greater than that of a common optical microscope. In addition to the magnifying amount, this microscope does not rely on a series of lenses and light, it uses electron beams to pinpoint details pertaining to the sample.

Finally, just as the two microscopes mentioned before, the scanning electron scope completes the same function, to visualize elements much to small to be seen with the naked eye or even with a traditional light microscope.

The scanning electron scope can be compared to the transmission electron scope in that it uses beams of electrons to function. The difference between the two is the way in which they use the electrons to compile the images.
