This is a region in Asia Pacific that is within a convergent boundary of tectonic plates. The plates colliding include the  the Pacific, Philippine, Indian-Australian, Nazca, North American plates.

Explanation:

This region is a hot spot for earthquakes and volcanoes accounting for 90% of earth's earthquakes and 75% of earth's volcanoes. A convergent boundary occurs when two or more plates collide and the denser plate becomes subducted under the less dense plate. As the subducted plate dives into the mantle, it melts and the molten rock rises through the fissures that develop due to stress in region. The molten rock rises with pressure and when it breaches the surface, it erupts violently.

The plates, due to their ruggedness often get stuck as they slip past each other and when they unstuck, which is often suddenly, release enormous amount of energy as earthquakes
