In a senior college, 25% of the Year 11 students and 40% of the Year 12 students would
prefer not to wear school uniform. This particular college has 320 Year 11 students and
280 Year 12 students. Find the probability that a randomly chosen student is in Year 11
and is in favour of wearing school uniform. What is the overall percentage of students
who are in favour of wearing school uniform?

Answer :

Those in favour:

=(Quantity Yr11 Students)(0.75) + (Quantity of Yr12 Students)(0.60)

=(320)(0.75) + (280)(0.60)

=408 students

Probablity of a Year 11 Student:

=(Quantity of Yr11 Students)(0.75)/(Total Students)

=(240)/(600)

=0.4 = 40%

Percentage:

=(Students in favour)/(Total Students)

=408/600

=0.68 = 68%

The answer is 408 students
