According to the first chapter of the Book of Daniel the people of Judah were conquered by the Babylonians under their king Nebuchadnezzar. Some of the young people were taken to Babylon to train to be servants of the king. Among them were Daniel, Hananiah, Misael, and Azariah. The latter three had their names changed to Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego. They requested to be allowed to refrain from eating the provisions provided by the king and to eat only vegetables and drink water.
