After reading the play "Trifles," by Susan Glaspell, we can say the author uses irony that illustrates the idea that women are seen as less capable than men by doing the following:
A. She leads the men all over the Wright’s property to find clues, but leaves the women in the kitchen.
What is the irony in the play?
After a murder, the group of men consisting of the sheriff, Mr. Hale, and the county attorney goes to the house where the man was killed to look for evidence.
Mr. Hale's and the sheriff's wives accompany the men. However, they are left in the kitchen since, according to the men, figuring out a murder would be too difficult for them. They say women only worry about trifles (little things).
The irony, however, is that it is the women who find the evidence that would clarify the motive of the murder. Because they pay attention to details, they are able to see what the men cannot.
The situation shows how men underestimated women in early twentieth century.
