The story about Colonel Sherburn was gotten from "The adventures of Huckleberry Finn". There are several themes in the story such as freedom, slavery, hypocrisy, racism, superstition, etc.

In the adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it was stated that Colonel Sherburn was a wealthy shopkeeper in Arkansas who killed the town drunk that was named Boggs.

After the death of Boggs, a mob gathered and then decided to hang Colonel Sherburn. In a calm manner, he addressed the crowd and then criticized their cowardice. He stated that the men were only brave enough to carry out their grave act at night. This illustrated that he was a coward too as he was afraid.
