The abolitionists understood slavery was very important to the economy of the South:
1. and should remain in place.
2. but should be abolished.
3.so together with the North, a great union could be created.
4.however the sale of slaves should no longer be allowed.

Answer :

not too sure but i think it is 2

I believe the answer is: 2. but should be abolished.

The abolitionists see slavery as inhumane and should be stopped. This view become even more popular after the industrial revolution that come from western Europe, which eliminate the needs of using slave labour since it can be replaced with machines.
