The Elements of Design
DESCRIPTION
Line is a form which has the characteristic of length and width created by a series of points. Art
defines a line as a moving dot; having a dynamic inherent quality created through movement. The
characteristics and variables of line are: size, shape, position, direction, number, interval and density.
Points create lines and lines form shapes or planes and volume.
There are many types of line. Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal are the most common. Horizontal
lines are peaceful and calming. They also provide order and move the eye from left to right. Vertical lines
are said to suggest stability and strength. Diagonal lines express spontaneity and stimulate the eye,
providing action and movement on the page.
Lines have weight too as they may be thick or thin; whole or broken. Lines can be straight, curved,
or jagged. Jagged lines convey enthusiasm, anger, and energy. Curved lines are sensuous, organic, and
rhythmic.
Illustrators use line to convey meaning and guide the viewer's eye across the page. Many lines can
be put together to make a shading effect. An example of this is cross-hatching, where many small
horizontal lines are put over many small vertical lines. This gives a realistic shading effect. someone please help!!!
