Japan didn't have a written language, so they used Chinese writing (kanji) to write Japanese words; enabling the Japanese to keep records, record legends, and develop their own literature
using kanji to write Japanese was difficult, so they invented Kana (borrowed letters; writing used simplified Chinese characters to stand for syllables in Japanese words
