The troops were ordered to form a guard outside the building, and the protesters starter throwing snowballs at the troops in response. One of the snowballs hit a British Private, who instinctively fired his rifle at the crowd. The other soldiers started firing their rifles, and when the heat settled down a moment later, five colonists were dead on the ground. A month later, the American Revolution officially started.
